Particular reserve of Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) is a unit of conservation of private domain especially to be protected by express manifestation of its proprietor, by means of public recognition, for its relevance for the conservation of biodiversity. The introduction of the RPPNs in the national system of units of conservation - SNUC, occurred in the decade of 90, consolidates the presence of the Brazilian private initiative in the emblematic ambient question.
RPPN SESC Pantanal is a Unit of Conservation of sustainable use. With 106.644 hectares of surface and a perimeter of 227 kilometers, of which 110 constitute edges of the rivers Cuiabá and São Lourenço, is the biggest RPPN of Brazil. It is located in the city of Baron of Melgaço. It was created to protect a significant parcel of the Pantanal, to preserve rare, endemic or threatened species of extinguishing, to authorize the ambient education in the reserve and around her and to promote the protection of hydrics resources.
The Pantanal where the Reserve of the important SESC is inserted results of the interaction between three biomas South Americans: the Open pasture, the Chaco and the Amazonian Forest. The Brazilian Constitution of 1988 recognizes it as one of the essential areas to the environment of the Country, being national assigned person and internationally as one of the more important aquatic environment regions of the Land. It is the first Brazilian Ramsar Small farm in private area.
The RPPN SESC Pantanal is one of the zone-nucleus of the Reserve of the Biosfera, recognized for UNESCO in 2000, what it gives to global importance for the expressivities of the systems and natural processes to it in its interior, as well as for the positive effect for around her.
The protection of the Pantanal requires the knowledge of the multiple aspects that intervene with your balance and define your behavior. In partnership with famous institutions the SESC Pantanal comes investing in research. In eight years specialists of diverse areas they had more than carried through 40 researches, whose resulted they will extend the knowledge on the Pantanal. In these projects six Brazilian federal universities are involved. With the UFMT they are in course twenty projects of the Program of Ecological Research of Long Duration - PELD, executed with the resources of the CNPq and support of the SESC Pantanal.
The program of research and technological development thus is planned:
General research for knowledge of the area: aquatic identification of the fish and other species, of the fauna of the birds and the mammals, of the reptiles, batrachians and clams; identification of the flora; hydro-meteorological monitoring and of the quality of the water.
Research of handling for the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity: studies of monitoring and control of the fire; evaluation of the impact of the elimination of the cattle in the vegetation and the fauna; biology and local behavior of the species in extinguishing process; research for ambient education, tourism ecological and sustainable development.
The administrative and operational organization of the RPPN - SESC Pantanal counts on seven ranks of operation and an efficient structure of prevention and combat the forest fires.
The ranks make use of installations for visitors, guard-park and researchers, beyond a complete infrastructure for its maintenance and development of scientific research, since the ways of transport primitive, but indispensable, as horses, ox car, until advanced technologies as GPS, diverse radio-communication, computers, equipment for research, tractors, vehicles, boats and aircraft.
